A public hearing was successfully conducted for the proposed expansion of Tata Steel’s ferro alloys plant, at Joda. The entire process was completed by the district administration of Keonjhar, in Odisha.
The public hearing function was organised on 12 November 2014, and about 4,000 people attended it. However, only 87 people could give their opinion, out of which 84 supported the expansion of the ferro alloys plant. The public hearing received support from the district administration, representative of NGOs, Odisha State Pollution Control Board senior officials, along with the local people.
Tata Steel has proposed to expand the capacity of its existing unit, running since 1957, from 0.0504 million tpa to 0.06 million tpa. For the expansion, it did not require additional land, as it will be within its existing plant premises of 47.13 acre of land.
