On 8 December 2013, Parkash Singh Badal, Chief Minister of Punjab, inaugurated Unit-I of Rajpura thermal power plant at Nalash village in Patiala district.
Unit-I of the project has a capacity of 700 MW. The entire 1,400 MW (2 x 700 MW) coal-based thermal power unit is being developed by Nabha Power, an SPV owned by L&T Power Development, with an investment of Rs 9,600 crore. The company will supply power to the Punjab government for 25 years as per the agreement signed between the two.
Nabha Power is planning to commission Unit-II of the project by March 2014, one month ahead of the actual scheduled date.
Coal supply for the Rajpura power plant has been secured through a fuel supply agreement with South Eastern Coalfields.
