Steel Authority of India (SAIL), is planning to raise its capacity to 50 million tpa by 2022 with Rs 1.2 lakh crore investment.
Under the proposed plan, the company will increase its capacity upto 50 million tpa from its current capacity of 14 million tpa. Most of the planned expansion will be carried out through brownfield expansions in the existing five steel mills, barring one proposed at Sindri in Jharkhand, where the company plans to set up a 5.6 million tpa greenfield steel plant.
At present, SAIL has 14 million tpa capacity. The company will increase its capacity upto 19 million tpa by the end of this year. By next year it will go upto 24 million tpa. When the 13th Five Year Plan ends, SAIL's capacity will escalate to 50 million tpa.
