The much anticipated Lumding-Silchar broad gauge project is scheduled to be completed by March 2015, as per the Northeast Frontier Railways (NFR) authorities.
According to NFR, 90.59 per cent of the work has been completed at a total cost of Rs 5,185.44 crore. From 1 October 2014, mega blocks will be effective in this region.
The hilly terrains, sharp curves and steep gradients made the project technically challenging, particularly in tunnels 7 and 10.
The authorities decided to consult the Research and Design Standards Organization of Railways, National Institute of Rock Mechanics, and National Institute of Technology in Silchar, to overcome these technical complications.
