Under the Sagarmala Programme, 272 road and rail connectivity projects have been identified to enhance port-linked infrastructure across India. This update was shared by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in the Rajya Sabha.
These projects are being executed by agencies including the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Ministry of Railways, Major Ports, and private concessioners. Of the 272 projects, 74 have been completed, 67 are under implementation, and 131 are currently under development. A National Sagarmala Apex Committee has been constituted to provide overarching policy guidance, coordinate at a high level, and review the planning and execution of various initiatives.
The Ministry also conducts Maritime States Development Council (MSDC) meetings periodically to foster coordination among central and state agencies involved in maritime development.
Overall, 839 projects have been identified under Sagarmala at an estimated cost of Rs 5.79 lakh crore. Out of these, 119 projects worth Rs 2.42 lakh crore are being implemented through the public-private partnership (PPP) mode, while the rest are funded through the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) mode via direct government investment. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has revised funding guidelines under the Sagarmala Scheme to ensure better financial governance and accelerate project execution.
