The Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS), Pune has been tasked with preparing the rehabilitation design for the Medigadda and Annaram barrages, following a recommendation from the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA).
The NDSA, in its report submitted on 30 April, 2025, outlined the steps required to restore the functioning of both barrages and emphasised the involvement of top research institutions for investigation and design. With permission from the Irrigation Chief Engineer, Ramagundam, investigatory studies have now been formally entrusted to CWPRS. A team of CWPRS officials, along with field engineers, conducted on-site inspections at both barrages on July 23 and 24, examining all structural components and identifying core sampling points. They plan to carry out 3D-stress analysis using the finite element method to assess structural integrity.
The Irrigation Superintending Engineer, Ramagundam, has requested CWPRS to submit comprehensive design reports for both barrages, detailing load types and combinations, including gate loads, thrust loads, hydrostatic loads, dead loads, live loads, wind loads, and earthquake loads. Additionally, the Chief Engineer, Central Designs Organisation, Hyderabad, has been asked to provide existing design reports for further analysis.
