The first operational section of Chennai Metro Phase II, the Poonamallee to Porur stretch on Corridor 4, is now expected to open in January 2026, a delay from the original target of December.
According to officials from Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL), the delay is due to slower progress on station entry and exit structures, as well as pending statutory clearances. Key approvals from the Railway Board and Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) are still awaited. The final step before opening requires an inspection by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), which is expected to take place in the third week of December, pending the issuance of necessary speed and ISI certificates.
Despite the delays, CMRL officials remain optimistic, stating that over 93 percent of the construction work is complete, and entry/exit points at key stations will be ready by the end of December. Once all regulatory approvals are secured, the project will seek an inauguration date from the State and Central governments.
