The long-awaited capacity expansion of the Konkan Railway line has moved forward as Konkan Railway Corporation (KRCL) begins preparing a detailed project report (DPR) for the doubling of 263 km of track.
Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw shared the update in a written reply to a Lok Sabha question on 10 December, 2025. The Konkan Railway, running from Roha in Maharashtra to Thokur in Karnataka, plays a key role in connecting the western coastal states, traversing the challenging terrain of the Western Ghats. While doubling has been completed on two stretches — Roha–Veer and Madgaon–Majorda, covering 55 km, the remaining 685 km still require expansion.
Minister Vaishnaw emphasised that the project will require substantial financial investment and contributions from the state governments involved. "This expansion will significantly boost the capacity and efficiency of the railway line," he said.
