The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced a comprehensive urban infrastructure revamp, planning to lay 200 km of new footpaths across the city at an estimated cost of Rs 200 crore. The initiative aims to improve pedestrian infrastructure and beautify public spaces, making Chennai more walkable and aesthetically appealing.
To kick off the project, GCC has floated tenders to appoint a private consultant for the first phase, with an initial design budget exceeding Rs one crore. The selected consultant will be tasked with designing footpaths that enhance pedestrian safety, reduce conflicts with vehicles, and ensure comfort for walkers. A senior GCC official stated, “The objective is to develop high-quality, accessible, and continuous non-motorist transit (NMT) infrastructure across Chennai and oversee its implementation.”
Designs must adhere to standards set by the Indian Roads Congress (IRC), Complete Streets Guidelines, Harmonised Guidelines, and the GCC's Inclusive Design Manual. The footpaths will include adequate width, seating zones, and seamless integration with MTC bus stops and Metro stations. Additionally, GCC has issued a tender for the annual maintenance of beautified areas around Marina Beach, covering parks, fountains, medians, and plantations.
