The state highways and minor ports department has resolved land acquisition issues which delayed construction of the 1.3-km flyover from Tamukkam to Nelpettai, popularly known as the Goripalayam bridge, and assured completion before January 2026.

The Rs 190.40 crore project, a 12-mtrs.-wide structure, received technical sanction on 30 April, 2023, and was officially launched by Chief Minister MK Stalin in October, 2023. According to officials, the flyover is being built in three sections: Tamukkam ground to Thevar statue, a parallel structure to the existing AV Bridge up to Anna statue in Nelpettai, and Thevar statue to Sellur. The entire flyover will comprise 61 piers and 62 spans.

“There was a delay in acquiring land in the Tamukkam– Goripalayam section. It has been resolved and the project is going ahead smoothly. We will complete the structure parallel to the AV bridge in November,” said a Highways Department official. The Sellur arm will be completed by December and serve as a one-way. Service roads and a vehicular underpass at Bibikulam–Gandhi Museum Road junction are also part of the project.
