The long-pending Thammanam-Pullepady road development project in Kochi has gained momentum with the submission of the final social impact assessment (SIA) report, recommending the government proceed with land acquisition of 3.9 hectares.
The project proposes widening the existing five-mtrs. carriageway into a four-lane road with a seven-mtrs.-wide carriageway on each side, a 1.2-m median, sidewalks, and drainage. The report emphasised that the development would ease congestion on Banerjee Road and Sahodaran Ayyappan Road, enabling smoother travel for both vehicles and pedestrians.
The Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) has already sanctioned Rs 93.89 crore for land acquisition to extend the project up to MG Road and NH bypass. It noted, "MG Road, which runs parallel to Sahodaran Ayyappan Road and Banerjee Road... Upon completion, the Thammanam-Pullepady road development project will reduce travel time, fuel loss due to traffic jams and the resulting environmental pollution. Therefore, the social benefits... will outweigh the initial investment costs."
