JSW Energy has announced plans to double the capacity of its Salboni thermal power project in West Bengal to 3,200 MW, with an expected total investment of around Rs 40,000 crore.
This marks one of the largest private-sector investments in the state's power sector. Currently, the company is implementing the first phase of the project, a 1,600 MW (2×800 MW) ultra-supercritical thermal power plant, which has already received environmental clearance. Speaking at the Business and Industry Conclave 2025, JSW Energy Joint MD and CEO Sharad Mahendra stated that the expansion will occur in phases, depending on regulatory approvals and fuel tie-ups, as part of the company’s long-term strategy to enhance its thermal power portfolio and meet the growing energy demand in the state.
The initial phase requires an investment of Rs 16,000 crore and has a 25-year power purchase agreement with WBSEDCL, utilising domestic coal under the SHAKTI B (IV) policy.
