In a major milestone for the ongoing four-laning of National Highway-05 between Kaithlighat and Shakral village, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has completed construction of a 1,295-mtrs.-long tunnel, significantly reducing travel distance by 10 to 12 km. Built at a cost of Rs 267 crore, the tunnel is located between Ranghav and Bhad villages in Shimla district.
According to Col Ajay Singh Bargoti, Regional Officer, NHAI Shimla, the tunnel forms a critical link in the Shimla Bypass project and posed considerable geological and hydrological challenges due to the complex Himalayan terrain. “The proximity of Jutogh and Jaunsar Thust formations led to highly fractured and unstable rock conditions, compounded by severe water ingress at multiple points,” he said.
Despite these hurdles, the contractor’s experienced team used advanced tunnelling techniques, real-time geotechnical monitoring, and adaptive engineering to ensure safety and efficiency. “The breakthrough is not just a structural achievement, but a reflection of the spirit, resilience and professionalism that define modern infrastructure development in mountainous terrain,” Col Bargoti added.
The tunnel is expected to ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity in the region, enhancing both commuter experience and logistics efficiency.
