On 2 December 2013, E M Sudarsana Natchiappan, Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, inaugurated a quality evaluation laboratory-cum-training centre at Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu.
The centre has been developed with an investment of Rs eight crore by Spices Board.
The laboratory can test samples for 10 parameters such as total plate count, yeast and mould count, salmonella, coliform, aflatoxin, sudan eye, moisture, colour value, volatile oil and capsaicin. Besides, with advanced equipment, it will help to identify the pesticides, illegal dilution and other life threatening funguses seen in spices.
In addition to the lab, the company is also planning to conduct training and R&D project work in quality control aspects of spice and spice products.
