In early February 2012, CEAT, announced its plans
to foray in Bangladesh. The company intends to
set up a tyre manufacturing plant in Bangladesh at an investment of Rs 250 crore by 2015. "Our board has
approved to set up a plant in Bangladesh. This would be
the company's first plant in Bangladesh, where it was
already exporting tyres from India. This will be the first
such big tyre plant in Bangladesh," Paras Chowdhary,
Managing Director, CEAT.
The facility will initially roll out only cross-ply tyres for
various segments like trucks and light commercial
segments. Currently, the company is scouting for land to set up the manufacturing facility. Bangladesh is the
CEAT's second overseas manufacturing location; the
company currently operates three plants in Sri Lanka
through its CEAT Kelani Holding JV alongside its three
Indian facilities.
Also, NTPC, through its wholly owned trading arm NTPC
Vidyut Vyapar Nigam has signed a long-term agreement to
supply power to the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB). It will supply 250 MW to the BPDB. The power will
flow through a 500-MW line between Baharampur in West
Bengal's Murshidabad district and Bhermara in Ishurdi-
Khulna area of western Bangladesh.
Further, Binani Industries (BIL), as a part of Braj Binani
Group's strategy to expand its footprint in the global
fibreglass market, acquired 3B - The Fibreglass Company
('3B'), a Belgian fibreglass company. The acquisition was
valued at Euro 275 million (approx Rs 1,773.75 crore). BIL
has acquired the entire equity interest in 3B from private
equity investor Platinum Equity. BIL will own 3B's plants in
Battice (Belgium) and Birkeland (Norway). 3B is a
manufacturer of fibreglass for reinforcement of
thermoplastics and thermoset polymer applications, and
is a preferred supplier to global companies in industries,
including automotive and wind energy. With this
acquisition, Binani will become a prominent supplier to
industries such as automotive, wind energy, electrical,
electronics, marine, infrastructure and transportation,
primarily in Europe.
Another notable investment proposals during the month
included that of Tata Power's plans to develop a geothermal
project in Indonesia; Steel Strip Wheels' proposed wheel
manufacturing facility in Morocco etc.
