Announcement of a couple of mega Electricity projects in February 2010, saw the aggregate fresh investment proposed in the month recording a 107 per cent growth over such investment announced in January 2010. In all, February saw announcement of 680 new projects entailing a total investment of Rs 51,462 crore.

 

In January 2010, 650 projects were announced with an investment of Rs 25,083 crore. Among the major sectors, the Electricity sector accounted for around 54 per cent of the total fresh investment emanated in the month. The 51 new power projects announced in the month entailed a total investment of Rs 27,616 crore. Among the 51 power projects, these were major ones:

 

 
  • Alfa Infraprop's (a Sravanthi Group company) 2,640 MW coal based supercritical thermal power plant in Vijayanagaram district of Andhra Pradesh with an investment of Rs 12,000 crore
  • JSW Energy's 1,600 MW coal based power plant at Ichhapur in West Bengal involving an investment of Rs 9,680 crore
  • Adani Power MP's 1,320 MW coal based power unit in Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh
  • NSL Nagapatnam Power & Infratech's 1,320 MW coal based power plant in Deogarh district of Orissa
 

 

The list of fresh projects announced also included 15 hydel based power projects and 23 nonconventional power projects including wind, solar and waste based power plants.

 

The Manufacturing sector observed 25 per cent rise in the total investment as compared with January 2010 figures. As against 126 projects worth Rs 9,195 crore were announced in January, 118 projects worth Rs 22,486 crore were announced in February 2010. Within the Manufacturing sector, Cement, Machinery and Steel sectors saw sizeable investment announcements. ACC's 2.50 million tpa clinker unit along with one million tpa cement unit in Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu involving an investment of Rs 1,800 crore was the largest manufacturing project of the month. It was followed by the Rs 1,500 crore J K Tyre & Industries' automotive tyres unit at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu.

In the Mining sector, 10 projects were announced. Among which, Phil Minerals Beneficiation & Energy's 10 lakh tpa coal washery unit in Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh involving an investment of Rs 57 crore was the largest.

 

The Construction sector saw around 27 new commercial complexes including shopping malls, six new hotels and nine new hospitals being announced across India. In addition, ProjectsToday collected information on 109 Real Estate projects, which were at different stages of their development. Among them, the largest one was of Fortune Group's residential project 'Fortune Township' at Jessore Road, Barasat in Kolkata district of West Bengal with an investment of Rs 1,680 crore. The project to be implemented in four phases, comprises 16 buildings of G+4 floors with total 560 flats including various modern amenities.

 

The Service sector saw 480 infrastructural projects (Roadways, Railways etc.), 28 water supply schemes being announced. The National Highways Authority of India announced its intention of upgradation of Multai-Chhindwara-Seoni section of NH-69A and Narsinghpur-Amarawara- Chhindwara-Saoner section on NH-26B in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra entailing an investment of Rs 1,250 crore.

 

Major MoU signed: On 10 February 2010, Public Health Foundation of India signed an MoU with Orissa government for setting up an Indian Institute of Public Health near Bhubaneswar in Khurda district of Orissa. The project will entail an investment of Rs 1,400 crore.

 

Of the total project announced, 405 projects entailing a total investment of Rs 6,337 crore were by the State and Central government agencies. Private entities accounted for the balance 275 projects worth Rs 45,125 crore.
