Not much change was seen in the fresh investment scenario in May 2011. During the month, 601 startups worth Rs 15,112 crore were announced. In the preceding month 644 startups were announced. The month also saw less number of mega projects.
Of the major sectors, the Manufacturing and Services sectors together accounted for around 94 per cent of the total fresh investment announced in May 2011. Electricity sector, which always accounted for sizeable amount of fresh investment, could not contribute much to the fresh investment kitty.
Steel, Electronics, Hospital, Ports & Real Estate sectors saw a couple of new mega projects. But for a couple of mega projects, no appreciable increase was observed in private startups. As against 318 new private projects seen in April, only 299 projects were announced in May 2011. Of the 299 startups announced by the Private sector in May 2011.

Visible drop in the number of electricity projects saw aggregate fresh investment dropping from Rs 2,874 crore in April 2011 to measly RS 304 crore in May 2011.
Four large size power projects announced during May 2011. Though project cost of none of these projects have been finalised, together they have generation capacity of 2,610 MW. Two of the four mega projects will be located in the Raigarh district of Maharashtra. The two others are planned in Orissa and Gujarat.
AES Mangaon Power & Swiss Merchandise Infrastructure have firmed up plans to set up coal based power projects of 825 MW & 490 MW respectively in Raigarh district of Maharashtra. While Orissa Power Consortium's 750 MW gas based power unit will be located at Kalagarh, Marshaghai in Kendrapada district of Orissa, CLP Power India wants to expand its gas based power plant capacity from 655 MW to 1,200 MW in Bharuch district of Gujarat.
The Services & Utilities sector had about 54 per cent share in the total project investment announced during the month. Though a number of new Roadways projects were announced during May 2011, no mega projects were taken up by the NHAI. Among other projects SEZ Videocon Industries plans to set up a industrial SEZ either in Ranchi or Saraikela district of Jharkhand with an investment of Rs 240 crore. In the Ports sector, Kolkata Port Trust floated a tender for development of Haldia Dock-II (South) and (North) at a cost of Rs 694 crore and Rs 634 crore respectively. Both the projects are to be developed on DBFOT basis at Haldia Dock Complex and will have concession period of 30 years each.
Though the Real Estate sector saw increase in number of new announcements aggregate investment envisaged therein declined by 43 per cent on M-o-M basis. Of the 151 fresh intentions, the Delhi State Industrial & Infrastructure Development Corporation was noteworthy. DSIIDC is planning to take up a low cost housing project comprising 18,760 flats for urban poor / slum rehabilitation at Bawana-III (Poothkhurd) in Delhi. The project is estimated to cost Rs 517 crore.
