Half of the new investment came
from the Electricity sector

Though the number of startups increased in September as compared to August statistics, investment intented therein declined by 26 per cent. Absence of high ticket projects pulled down the aggregate investment figures for September 2009. As against eight mega projects (investment of Rs 1,000 crore or more) announced in August 2009 only four were announced in the current month.

 

The Electricity sector which attracted 51 new projects and accounted for around 62 per cent of the fresh investment announced in August 2009, saw announcement of another 42 projects and accounted for around half of the fresh investment witnessed in September 2009. Of the 42 projects, the most ambitious one was of JSW Energy. The company intends to set up a 1,620 MW coal based power unit at Baranda in Ranchi district of Jharkhand with an investment of Rs 7,938 crore. The second largest power project of the month was announced by the Karnataka Power Corporation, which plans to develop a 2,100 MW gas based combined cycle power unit at Tadadi port in Uttara Kannada district.

 

Three projects of identical capacities (1,320 MW) were announced by Sahara India Power Corporation, Banswara Thermal Power Company, a wholly subsidiary of Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Prasaran Nigam, and Sudama Mahavir Power.

 

During the month, the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation invited request for proposals for the development of the following thermal power projects in the state:

 

 
  • 4,000 MW at Bargadh in Chitrakut district
  • 1,320 MW at Chola in Bulandshahr district
  • 1,320 MW at Dohrighat in Mau district
  • 1,980 MW in Farrukhabad district
  • 1,320 MW at Sandila in Hardoi district

 

In the recent past the Manufacturing sector had seen large size cement and steel projects being announced. Though the trends continued in September, there were not many large size projects. As a result, the total envisaged investment declined by 22 per cent on month-over-month basis.

 

Some of the notable projects announced in September were

 
  • Kasturi Cement's five million tpa cement plant along with 15 MW coal based captive power unit at Tilda in Raipur district of Chhattisagrh.
  • Pidilite Industries' synthetic elastomer unit with a capacity of 50,000 tpa at Dahej in Bharuch district of Gujarat, with an investment of Rs 550 crore.
  • National Paints Factories (India)'s paints unit with a capacity of two lakh litres per day at Kochi in Kerala, entailing an investment of Rs 500 crore.
  • MSP Steel & Power's integrated steel unit at Govindpur, Keonshar Sadar in Keonjhar district of Orissa.

In the Services & Utilities sector, 350 Roadways, 10 Railways, 60 Water Supply Schemes and 75 Other Community Services (hostels, school buildings etc.) were announced during the month. Pipavav Shipyard, which made an IPO in September 2009, announced its plans to set up a shipyard at Pipavav in Amreli district of Gujarat with an investment of Rs 2,603 crore.

 

Another large size project announced in this sector was by Western Railways for laying GC line connecting Ahmedabad-Himmatnagar-Udaipur at an investment of Rs 742.88 crore.

 

The Construction sector witnessed 28 new Commercial Complexes including Shopping Malls, 14 Hotels and 10 Hospitals. Of the 10 Hospitals, Aadhar Group's Hospital project in joint venture with DM Healthcare with a capacity of 250 beds in Kolhapur district of Maharashtra, was a notable one and the 'Lemon Tree' hotel in Delhi by Krizm with 540 rooms was the largest hotel project of the month.

 

Rivaj Infratech's (a subsidiary of Omaxe) hi-tech township in Bulandshahar district of Uttar Pradesh was the largest Real Estate project announced in September. The project spread over 3,601.19 acres of land will be implemented in phases.

 

During the month two new SEZs were announced

 

 

 
  • Suzlon Infrastructure's hi-tech engineering components SEZ in Bangalore, will spread over 680 acres of land.
  • RNB Infrastructure's textile SEZ in Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu.

 

The mining sector saw announcement of nine projects, of this the largest project was Ind Synergy's two million tpa iron ore mining project at Hahaladdi village in Kanker district of Chhattisgarh.
