Manufacturing gains momentum

During the first two months (April & May 2010), 1,603 projects worth Rs 96,700 crore were announced as against 1,050 projects worth Rs 61,162 crore announced during the same period a year ago.
The Manufacturing sector saw some large ticket projects being announced in May 2010. During the month, 182 manufacturing projects were announced entailing an investment of Rs 9,119 crore compared to 135 projects worth Rs 7,258 crore in April 2010 and 90 projects entailing an investment of Rs 6,002 crore in March 2010. Within the Manufacturing sector, Drugs & Pharmaceuticals, Cement, Steel and Automobiles sectors attracted couple of mega projects.

Nectar Lifesciences' drug formulations unit with a capacity of 1,750 tpa at Larado in Chandigarh entailing an investment of Rs 1,500 crore

Indian Oil Corpn's styrene butadiene rubber unit with a capacity of 1.20 lakh tpa in Panipat district of Haryana, involving an investment of Rs 900 crore

Asian Paints India's paints and intermediates unit with a capacity of 4 lakh tpa at Kesurdi, Khandala taluka in Satara district of Maharashtra with an investment of Rs 735 crore

Though high ticket projects were missing in the Steel sector, around 47 startups with a total investment of Rs 1,184 crore were announced in May 2010. In the preceding month, 26 projects worth Rs 974 crore announced in April 2010. Of the 47 new steel projects notable ones were Abhijeet Ferro Tech's 95,000 tpa ferro manganese unit and 80,000 tpa silicon manganese unit (the largest project with an investment of Rs 391 crore) and Anjaney Alloys' ferro alloys unit with an investment of Rs 204 crore at Atchutapuram SEZ in Visakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh.
The surge in announcement of large Electricity projects seen in the recent past continued in May also. The month saw 43 new Electricity projects with an aggregate generation capacity of 21,804 MW being announced. In fact, fresh investment in the Electricity sector accounted for 53 per cent of the total fresh investment emanated in May 2010. Among 43 power projects, these were major ones:

Tiana Power Projects' 2,000 MW gas based power unit at Dabhol in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra, with an investment of Rs 9,000 crore

Jindal Stainless' 1,320 MW super critical thermal power unit at Luni in Dhenkanal district of Orissa, with an investment of Rs 7,375 crore

Essar Power Gujarat's expansion of Salaya II coal fired power unit from 1,200 MW to 2,520 MW at Salaya in Jamnagar district of Gujarat entailing an investment of Rs 5,209 crore

Gautami Power Samalkot's 1,278 MW gas based combined cycle power unit - Stage II in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh involving an investment of Rs 3,900 crore

Tata Power's 1,600 MW coal based power unit (Phase-I) in Raigarh district of Maharashtra.

In the Mining sector, 15 projects were announced. Among which Indo Pellets' six million tpa iron ore beneficiation and 2.4 million tpa iron ore pelletisation unit at Motuda in Keonjhar district of Orissa involving an investment of Rs 800 crore was the largest.
The Construction sector saw around 38 new commercial complexes including shopping malls, six new hotels and 15 hospitals being announced across India. In addition, ProjectsToday collected information on 83 Real Estate projects, which were at different stages of development. Among them, the largest one was of Skytop Builders' township 'Skytop Golf Village' at Hunsur Road in Mysore district of Karnataka. The township to be spread over 612 acres of land, will comprise 400 retirement homes, 120 villas, G+3 floors boutique hotel, 200 beds hospital and G+4 floors shopping mall. Indian Hotels Co.'s (Tata Group) redevelopment of 'Sea Rock Hotel' at Bandra (West) in Mumbai was the biggest project in the hotel sector. The hotel comprises 1,000 rooms with various modern amenities.
The Service sector saw 249 infrastructural projects (Roadways, Railways etc.), 69 water supply schemes being announced. The National Highways Authority of India announced six-laning of Krishangarh- Udaipur-Ahmedabad section of NH-79A, 79, 76 and 8 with new Udaipur bypass in Rajasthan and Gujarat on BOT basis under NHDP Phase-V entailing an investment of Rs 5,134 crore.

On 6 May 2010, Jindal Stainless signed an MoU with the Orissa Government for setting up of 1,320 MW Super Critical Thermal Power Plant (SCTPP) at Luni in Dhenkanal district with an investment of Rs 7,375 crore

On 11 May 2010, Honda Motorcycle & Scooters India (HMSI) signed an MoU with state government for setting up a two-wheeler unit (Phase I) with a capacity of 6 lakh units per annum at Tapukara industrial area in Alwar district of Rajasthan.

In addition to this, on 31 May 2010, Maharashtra Government signed MoUs with 12 companies including ACC, Asian Paints, Shree Virangana Steel, Polygenta Technologies, Chinteshwar Steel, Bedhmutha Wire Company, Shree Vaishnav Casting, Meta Rails & Commodities, Rasoya Proteins, Abhay Cotex, Chedda Electricals & Electronics, Laurel Wires.
