In May 2007, ProjectsToday monitored 648 new projects entailing a total
investment of Rs.16,637 crore. Though in terms of number of projects, the
Services & Infrastructure sector saw the announcement of 475 new projects in
terms of investment commitments, Power sector accounted for nearly half of the
total fresh investments announced in May 2007.
Of the 29 new power projects announced in May 2007, two were large in size,
involving investment of Rs.4,000 crore each. The first one was the coal based
1,200 MW power plant at Bhavnagar in Gujarat proposed by the private held
Patel Energy and the second project was a 1,000 MW thermal power plant Stage-
I of Damodar Valley Corpn., a PSU, at Raghunathpur in Purulia district of West
Bengal.
To exploit the immense scope for setting up hydel power plants present in the
state, on 09 May 2007, Government of Arunachal Pradesh invited EoIs for setting
up hydroelectric power projects with a total capacity of 8,020 MW, in various
districts. These projects will be developed on BOOT basis.
In the manufacturing sector, Textiles and Steel sector saw a number of new
proposals being announced. In all 39 new textiles
projects (mostly for manufacturing cotton and blended
yarn) were announced. Among the largest proposal was
the Rs.1,000 crore integrated textiles park of Pradip
Overseas at Bavala in Ahmedabad district of Gujarat.
The park will be spread over 44 hectares of land and will
be implemented in three phases. The company also
plans to set up a five-star hotel in Ahmedabad.

The steel sector saw one more MoU being signed for a
mega steel plant. On 11 May 2007, Bhushan Steel signed
an MoU with Government of West Bengal and the West
Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC)
for setting up a 2 million tpa integrated steel plant with a 1,000 MW captive
power plant in Bardhaman district and 0.5 million tpa capacity cold rolled and
galvanizing plant for automobile grade steel in North 24 Parganas district.
In the construction sector, around 60 new commercial complexes and shopping
malls were announced across the country. In addition, ProjectsToday also
collected information on 188 real estate projects, which were at different stages
of development. Major projects announced in the Real Estate sector were
Department of Atomic Energy's township along with necessary infrastructures
at Bhubaneswar in Orissa and 'Eldeco County' township projcct of Eldeco
Infrastructure & Properties in Sonipat district of Haryana. The ‘Eldeco County'
township will come up on 70 acres of land and comprise 450 residential villas,
three floors shopping mall, three schools and a hospital.
During May, Paradip Port Trust invited bids for the development of the southern
dock complex, to handle containers and oil products, construction of trade centre
block-I (Phase-I) and multipurpose cargo berth at Paradip in Jagatsingpur
district of Orissa.
Of the total projects announced during May 2007, 240 projects with a total
investment of Rs.8,598 crore were by the State and Central government agencies.
Private entities accounted for the balance 408 projects worth Rs.8,038 crore.
