Fall in announcement of new investment proposals by the Union Government agencies saw total fresh investment declining sharply in April 2010. After announcing a flurry of new projects in the Railways & Roadways sectors in March 2010, we saw subdued investment activities by the Union Government companies in April 2010. Of the 72 startups announced by the Union Government agencies, not a single project was of mega size. The two large projects announced in this sector were a Rs 350 crore power equipment project of BF-NTPC Energy Systems and a Rs 218 crore Berth project of the Visakhapatnam Port Trust. The Textile industry, which witnessed some revival in capacity buildup in the recent past, saw 17 more startups being announced in April 2010. Of this, the two projects of Alok Industries were the most ambitious. The company intends to expand capacities of its cotton spinning & polyester yarn units at Silvassa in Dadra & Nagar Haveli at a cost of Rs 600 crore and Rs 500 crore respectively.
The Cement industry saw two new projects each with an annual capacity of 2 million tpa being announced by Dalmia Cement. The new units will be located in Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) and Satna (Madhya Pradesh).
The Construction sector saw around 36 new Commercial Complexes including Shopping Malls, 18 new Hotels and 7 new Hospitals being announced across India. Among those projects, the KBJ Group's proposal to set up 11 Hotels across India with capacities ranging between 75 and 200 rooms was notable.
Sahyog Foundation's Medicity at Jagatpur in Cuttack district of Orissa involving an investment of Rs 900 crore was the largest hospital project of the month. The proposed hospital campus will have 150 seats medical college, 700 beds hospital, homeopathic college, ayurvedic college, shopping mall, gymnasium, swimming pool and food court with various modern amenities.
ProjectsToday also collected information on 114 Real Estate projects, which were at different stages of their development. Of which, Gaursons India's 'Gaur City' township at GH-01, Sector-4, Noida in Gautam Budh Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh was notable. The township will spread over 120 acre, and comprise 8,000 flats with various modern amenities like school, hospital, offices and hotels.

The Service sector saw 235 infrastructural projects (Roadways, Railways etc.), 36 power distribution projects & 45 water supply schemes being announced. The Public Work Department, Rajasthan's four-laning of Gomti Ka Chauraha to Udaipur section of NH-8 from km 177/0 to km 260/100 in Rajasthan, entailing an investment of Rs 890 crore was the biggest project.
Of the 16 mining projects, Bharat Coking Coal's development of Muraidih underground mines and extraction of coal from Muraidih III, II and I seam by mass production technology package for a minimum guaranteed production of 2 million tpa in Dhanbad district of Jharkhand was the largest investment proposal during the month.

On 09 April 2010, BGR Energy Systems signed an MoU with the state government for setting up a 1,320 MW coal based power unit at Bhapur in Nayagarh district of Orissa.

On 9 April 2010, the Orissa Government signed MoUs with five Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to set up thermal power projects in the state. The five IPPs who have signed the MoUs included BGR Energy System, JR Power Gen, Adhunik Power & Natural Resources, Maa Durga Thermal Power Company and Vijaya Ferro and Power.

On 26 April 2010, Bridgestone India, subsidiary of Bridgestone Corpn. Japan, signed an MoU with the Maharashtra Government to set up a manufacturing facility for passenger car radial tyres (PCR) and truck and bus radial tyres (TBR) at Chakan near Pune, Maharashtra.
