Fresh investment declined by around 45 per cent during the first five months of the current fiscal 2011-12. As against Rs 1,78,880 crore announced during the April-August 2010 period, only Rs 98,939 crore were announced during the April-August 2011 period. The decline was observed in terms of number of projects also.

 

On a month over month basis, however, fresh investment observed in August 2011 was higher than in July 2011. While the August month saw fresh investment of Rs 31,394 crore, July had attracted only Rs 14,249 crore of such investment. However, in terms of number of projects, as against 634 startups seen in July, 21 less (613) startups were announced in August 2011. A couple of mega projects in the Steel and Electricity sectors by private developers and a Rs 1,094 crore Highway project taken up by the NHAI helped in propping up the fresh investment scenario this August 2011. The Manufacturing sector attracted 180 projects worth Rs 12,704 crore, while the Electricity sector saw 35 startups worth Rs 11,648 crore being announced during the month. In the Manufacturing Sector, major investment was announced in the Iron & Steel, Cement, and Food Processing sectors.

  • Godawari Power & Ispat's steel unit, Rajnandgaon District, Chhattisgarh will have a DRI plant (1 million tpa), pig iron (1 million tpa), sinter plant (1.5 million tpa), iron ore beneficiation (3.5 million tpa), steel melting (two million tpa), rolling mill (0.5 million tpa), coke oven (0.6 million tpa), coal based captive power unit (300 MW).
  • Bundelkhand Resources' upcoming cement unit with a capacity of 2.5 million tpa, clinker unit with a capacity of 1 million tpa and, a 35 MW coal based captive power unit at Hazur in Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh.
  • Sunflag Infrastructure's cement unit with a capacity of 2 million tpa and a clinker unit with a capacity of 1 million tpa in Panna district of Madhya Pradesh.
  • John Deere Equipment's Tractors unit with a capacity of 50,000 numbers per annum in Dewas district of Madhya Pradesh.
  • Trihut Industries' sugar unit with a capacity of 5,000 tccpd, distillery unit with a capacity of 60 klpd and 28 MW bagasse and imported coal based captive power unit at Ryam in Darbhanga district of Bihar.

The Electricity sector garnered 35 new projects worth Rs 11,468 crore. Indian Metals & Ferro Alloys (IMFA), a steel manufacturer, announced its intentions to foray into commercial power generation with its proposed 1,320 MW coal based power unit in Orissa. Tata Power Company along with SN Power, Norway, plans to set up a 236 MW Dugar hydel power unit at Chenab Valley in Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh. In the Solar Power sector, US based Green Brilliance Energy has announced investment in four solar photovoltaic power units in Haryana, Maharashtra, and Uttarakhand. As many as 361 new projects worth Rs 6,142 crore were announced in the Services & Utilities sector. Among this, the NHAI announced four road upgradation projects in Rajasthan, Orissa, Karnataka and a carriageway project in Uttar Pradesh. It has taken up four-laning of Solapur - Bijapur section of NH-13 in length of 110.542 km in Maharashtra and Karnataka on BOT (Toll) basis under NHDP-III at a cost of Rs 1,097.50 crore. In Rajasthan, the NHAI plans to take up 160 km upgradation of Ladpura (NH-78) - Bhilwara (NH-79) - Gangapur - Rajsamand (NH-8) section and 190 km upgradation of Uniara (NH-116) - Nainwa - Hindole (NH-12) - Jahapur - Shahpura - Gulabpur (NH-79) section. In the Railways sector, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has announced its plans set up a new suburban railway station between Mulund and Thane on Central Railway Suburban Rail Corridor in Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The TMC has already invited EoIs for consultancy services for this project. The Vidarbha Irrigation Corporation has announced its investment intentions in around 17 projects spread across Maharashtra. All these projects, which are already in execution include Purna Irrigation scheme in Amravati district, Madan Irrigation scheme in Wardha district, and Navargaon Irrigation scheme at Maregaon in Yavatmal district.
