In July 2008, ProjectsToday collected details on 54 domestic and nine overseas project-related contracts, which were awarded across various sectors, amounting to Rs.28,747 crore.
Overseas Contracts
Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) bagged a $485 million (approx. Rs.2,080 crore) contract from the Public Establishment of Electricity for Generation & Transmission (PEEGT) of Syria for the design, engineering, manufacture, supply, erection and commissioning of the 400 MW Tishreen thermal power plant extension project in the country.
Punj Lloyd was awarded a $108 million (approx.Rs.432 crore) project from Tecnicas Reunidas, Spain, for carrying out mechanical works on two offshore sites and utilities project of Abu Dhabi Polymers Co, UAE.
BEML, the Bangalore-based leading mining and construction equipment manufacturer, bagged four export orders collectively worth Rs.254 crore. The company bagged supply orders for mining equipment valued Rs.158 crore from Pt. Fajar Bumi Sakti, Indonesia, and another order from Far East Resources & Mining Co Pte of Singapore, for the supply of mining equipment worth Rs.49 Crores for its coal mines at Tarakon, Indonesia. Additionally, BEML also bagged two small contracts from two African countries of Malawi and Tunisia.
Domestic Orders
On the domestic front, the Power sector (including power distribution) saw the highest number of contracts being finalised. In all, 19 contracts, worth Rs.18,802 crore were awarded in July 2008. Among these, the largest contract worth Rs.4,900 crore was bagged by BGR Energy for setting up the 2 x 600 MW Kali Sindh coal based power project in Jhalawar, Rajasthan. BHEL bagged a Rs.2,500 crore contract from Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Co. to provide boilers for the 1,600 MW Krishnapatnam power project.

The irrigation sector witnessed four contracts worth Rs.1,438 crore being awarded during July 2008. Of these, the largest work contract worth Rs.410 crore was from Government of Andhra Pradesh, Irrigation & CAD Department for investigation, design and execution of the lift scheme from Thotapally Reservoir to Gouravelly Reservoir, including tunnel and other allied works near Regonda village, Husnabad Mandal of Karimnagar..
In the Railway sector, three contracts totalling Rs.1,351 crore were awarded, which included Indian Railways' Rs.1,047 crore contract to Larsen & Toubro for setting up a cast steel manufacturing plant at Saran in Bihar and the Rs.200 crore contract won by Titagarh Wagons for manufacturing 900 wagons.
In the Petroleum Products (refinery) sector, Pune based Thermax bagged a Rs.820 crore contract to supply coal-fired boilers for a private refinery's captive co-generation plant.
