Domestic & Overseas Orders

 

In April 2008, ProjectsToday collected information on 59 domestic project-related contracts. These contracts were awarded across various sectors, with the total worth of activities amounting to Rs.17,459.85 crore. During April 2008, no activities on project related overseas contract were reported.

 

In the domestic sector, sizeable contracts were awarded in the Power, Coal, Commercial Complexes and the Iron and Steel sector. As always, the Power sector (including power distribution) saw the highest number of contracts being finalised. In all, 16 contracts worth Rs.5,620.61 crore were awarded. The largest contract was of Rs.3,368 crore from Chhattisgarh State Electricity Board, for the supply and installation of the main plant package at two power projects (one unit of 500 MW at Korba West thermal power project and two units of 500 MW each at the upcoming Marwa thermal power project) in Chhattisgarh. Bharat Heavy Electricals bagged the contract.

The Coal sector witnessed the second largest domestic contract worth $900 million (RS.3,600 crore). Australia-based Leighton Holdings' subsidiary Thiess Pty, bagged this contract to develop and operate a coal mine in India's northeastern coal fields.

 

The Commercial Complexes along with the Real Estate sector witnessed nine contracts worth Rs.3,357 crore being awarded during April 2008. Of these, the largest work contract worth Rs.2,000 crore was bagged by Larsen & Toubro from Bombay Dyeing, for developments at its Worli textile mills and spring mills complexes in Wadala, Mumbai. The scope of work involves construction of mixed-use developments of approximately 4 million sq. ft. at the textile mills and 5 million sq. ft. at the spring mills.

 

In the Iron & Steel sector, 11 contracts totaling to Rs.2,088.04 crore were awarded, of which, the biggest contract was worth Rs.1,038 crore, awarded to Ranchi-based Heavy Engineering Corporation for supplying complete coal handling plant at Bhilai steel plant in Durg, Chhattisgarh. SAIL awarded this contract.

 

In the Roadways sector, a total of four contracts totaling to Rs.618.93 crore were awarded. Amongst these, was a Rs.574 crore contract bagged by C&C Constructions from Jaypee Associates for road construction for the Zirakpur- Parwanoo section, a length of 28.69 km on NH-22 in Patiala, Punjab and Solan in Himachal Pradesh, on BOT basis.
