In February 2008, ProjectsToday collected
details on 60 domestic and overseas projectrelated
contracts, which were awarded. These
contracts were awarded across various sectors and
together were worth Rs.19,395 crore. Out of the
total 60 contracts, nine were overseas orders
bagged by Indian companies.
Of the nine overseas contracts, the largest was the
$431million (approx Rs.1,724 crore) order
awarded to Larsen and Toubro by Kuwait
National Petroleum Co. for upgradation of its
three refineries in Kuwait.
The second largest overseas order was to the tune
of $400 million (approx Rs.1,119.2 crore) by
Marina Bay Sands Pte. to Sembawang Engineers &
Constructors Pts, a wholly-owned subsidiary of
Punj Lloyd for constructing and developing the
North Podium of Marina Bay Sands integrated resort project.

The third biggest overseas order of the month was
bagged by Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL). The
PSU bagged the Rs.650 crore contract from
General Electricity Company for setting up a 300
MW gas turbine based power plant in Libya.
BHEL, one of the major power equipment
suppliers, also bagged the largest domestic order
in February 2008. The company bagged a Rs.3,390
crore contract from Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut
Utpadan Nigam for setting up the 2x500 MW
Anpara D thermal power plant in Sonbhadra,
Uttar Pradesh. With 22 contracts worth Rs.9,410.32 crore being
awarded, the Power sector was heading the table
of sectors. The other major contracts awarded in
this sector were the Rs.793 crore contract awarded
by APGENCO for execution of balance of plant for
the 500 MW coal based power unit (stage VI) at the
Kothagudem thermal power station in
Khammam, Andhra Pradesh. Chennai-based BGR
Energy Systems bagged this award.
The Iron & Steel sector witnessed six contracts
worth Rs.2,154.7 crore being awarded during
February 2008. Of these, the largest work contract
worth Rs.1,107 crore was bagged by Larsen &
Toubro. Steel Authority of India awarded the
turnkey contract for construction of coal & coke
handling plant and base mix preparation plant at
IISCO’s steel plant in West Bengal.
The Petroleum & Oil Gas exploration and Refining
sector together saw three contracts worth Rs.1,767
crore ebing awarded. These included the contract
bagged by Toyo India from India Oil Corporation
to set up its 370 mln tpa FCC gasoline
desulphurisation block (EPCC-2 Package) on
lump sum turnkey basis, for the Panipat refinery
upgradation project in Haryana.
In the Mineral Fuels sector, two contracts totaling
to Rs.1,450 crore being awarded, of which the
biggest order worth Rs.1,250 crore was awarded to
Larsen & Toubro by Oil & Natural Gas
Corporation to execute the Mumbai High
Redevelopment project.
