Fall in awarding of contracts continued in May

For the second consecutive month, the General Elections and the model code of conduct prevented a number of public sector companies from finalising the bidders and awarding the contracts.
In May 2009, in all 21 domestic contracts worth Rs 7,190 crore were awarded. In addition to this, Indian companies bagged six overseas contracts worth Rs 681 crore. In the preceding month, 30 domestic contracts worth Rs 6,249 crore were awarded.
Among the major sectors, the Power sector along with Transmission and Distribution accounted for around 56 per cent of the total job work awarded during May 2009. In all, 13 contracts worth Rs 4,402 crore were awarded in these sectors.
Domestic Contracts
Among the successful companies, BHEL won two contracts worth Rs 1,475 crore and Rs 703 crore from Korba West Power Company and Ideal Energy Projects respectively. The scope of work in the first contract included supply of the main plant package for the upcoming Avantha Bhandar thermal power project in Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh, involving a new-rating unit of 600 MW. The company’s second contract was for the main plant package at the upcoming Bela Thermal Power Project at Bela, in Nagpur district of Maharashtra, involving a newrating unit of 270 MW.
Punjab State Electricity Board awarded a Rs 1,033 crore contract to PGCIL for executing three 400 kV/220 kV substations at Muktsar, Makhu, Nakodar and another 2x500/3x315MVA substation at Dhuri in Punjab for evacuation of power from PSEB's Talwandi Sabo thermal power station in Bathinda district of Punjab.

In the Mineral Fuels sector, two contracts were awarded for a sum of Rs 1,946 crore. Afcons Infrastructure bagged the largest contract of the month, worth Rs 1,750 crore from ONGC for the development of an offshore platform at Bombay
High in Mumbai. The second contract secured by Madhucon Projects from Northern Coalfields was valued at Rs 196 crore.
Two contracts worth Rs 619.78 crore were awarded in the Irrigation sector. Patel Engineering secured a contract valued at Rs 554.67 crore from Vidarbha Irrigation Development Corporation. The contract job included construction of pump house with pumping machinery, electric overhead travelling crane, switch yard and construction of rising main with manifold and water hammer control device in Maharashtra.
Overseas Contracts
Of the six overseas contracts bagged by Indian companies, three went into the kitty of Larsen & Toubro. The contracts amounting to Rs 518.20 crore were bagged from Rural Areas Electricity Co SAOC, Oman Electricity Transmission Company and Oman Tourism Development Co. The remaining three contracts were of low value and were bagged by Siemens and KEC International.
