July sees record project contracts
|
After a four-month lull, contract awarding activities gained momentum in July 2009. In all, the month saw 82 project contracts worth Rs 22,215 crore being awarded. Even in terms of overseas contracts, Indian companies managed to get the highest number of contracts since January 2009

Of the nine Indian companies, which bagged the 14 overseas contracts worth Rs 11,024 crore, Sembawang Engineers & Constructors bagged four with a combined value of Rs 7,167 crore. Three of the contracts were bagged from International Investment Services Company of Libya for setting up hotels, luxury villas and high-end apartments. The fourth contract was bagged from Singapore Land Transport Authority for laying 16.6 km of railway line. Punj Lloyd, an Indian EPC giant, bagged three contracts from Housing & Infrastructure Board of Tripoli, Libya, for developing Roadways, Drinking water, Sewage water and storm water networks and setting up of Electrical and Telecommunication networks in three villages. Dayim Punj Lloyd Construction Contracting Co, bagged a Rs 1,210 crore cpntract from Saudi Armaco Total Refinery & Petrochemical Company for the supply of port tank farm of the Jubial Export Refinery Project in Saudi Arabia.
Domestic Contracts
On the domestic front, 68 contracts worth Rs 11,190 crore were awarded in July 2009. Though in terms of number of contracts, the roadways sector saw 17 contracts being awarded, in terms of value, Electricity, Power Distribution and Irrigation sectors saw high budget contracts being distributed.
In the roadways sector, PBA Infrastructure bagged 11 contracts from MMRDA to build skywalks at different junctions in Mumbai. The total value of these contracts was Rs 72 crore.

BGR Energy Systems secured largest Electricity contract of the month from Maharashtra Power Generation Corporation. The Rs 1,631.8 crore contract was for the execution of the 2x500 MW super thermal power station expansion project at Chandrapur.
Ashoka Buildcon and Ramky Infrastructure bagged the top two orders in the power distribution sector from Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company. Together, Electricity and Power Distribution sectors saw 24 contracts worth Rs 6,500 crore being awarded in July 2009. In the Petroleum sector, Larsen & Toubro bagged a Rs 440 crore order from HPCL-Mittal Energy for the construction of electromechanical sections for seven process units of the Guru Gobind Singh Refinery. At company level, Sembawang Engineers & Constructors and Punj Lloyd were the leaders in bagging overseas orders, in the domestic circuit; Nagarjuna Construction Company, McNally Engineering and Ramky Infrastructure were the major beneficiaries.
