BHEL bagged the largest contract in October 2009. The public sector electrical major, bagged a Rs 5,040 crore contract from Jindal Power for supply and installation of four units of 600 MW power project of O P Jindal Super Thermal Power Plant at Raigarh in Chhattisgarh.
Along with this contract, the Power sector saw 11 contracts worth Rs 7,262.04 crore being awarded in October 2009. Jyoti Structures and Areva T&D India won a contract worth Rs 900 crore for setting up 36 sub-stations, with a capacity of 220 kV and 132 kV in Maharashtra.
The NHAI awarded two contracts in the Roadways sector, one each to IRB Infrastructure Developers and a consortium of Reliance Infrastructure, AAA Communications and JTEG. IRB clinched a Rs 1,500 crore contract for design, engineering, finance, construction, operation and maintenance of Jaipur to Deoli Section of NH-12 in Rajasthan. Meanwhile, the Reliance consortium bagged a contract worth Rs 590 crore for four/six-laning of Jaipur-Reengus section. In addition to this, the sector also saw a mega contract worth Rs 1,793 crore being bagged by Nagarjuna Construction from the Government of Oman. In all, the four contracts awarded in the Roadways sector accounted for nearly a quarter of the total project contracts awarded during October 2009.
Of the seven contracts worth Rs 1,408 crore awarded in the Water & Waste Management sector five contracts (Rs 986.95 crore) were by Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam. Of this, three were bagged by Larsen & Toubro. These contracts amounting to Rs 488 crore were for providing sewage, waste & water management system to Varanasi, Allahabad and Mathura.

In addition to the above three contracts, L&T bagged seven more contracts during October and emerged as the largest beneficiary company. The company bagged orders to build two hotels, one hospital, an SEZ and a steel plant. The company's orders include construction of ITC Sonar Hotel at Kolkata and India Tower at Charni Road, Mumbai, developing a Free Trade Warehousing Zone at Sai village at Panvel and constructing a hospital building at Coimbatore.
On the whole, 49 domestic and overseas contracts totalling Rs 16,514.82 crore were amassed by Indian conglomerates during October 2009. A total of nine contracts were awarded by foreign entities. This included a contract worth Rs 1,793.36 crore secured by Nagarjuna Construction Company from the Government of Oman for building Phase II of Batinah road. Siemens in consortium with Siemens AG, Germany, bagged a contract amounting to Rs 403 crore from Ezdan Real Estate Company QSC for construction of a new 220/66 kV and three 66/11 kV substations at Ezdan International Housing project at Wukhair area in Qatar.
