L&T clinches two major orders in the Electricity sector

In November 2009, Larsen & Toubro (L&T), the engineering and construction major, bagged two contracts worth Rs 8,532 crore in the Electricity sector. The first contract worth Rs 6,897 crore was from Maharashtra State Power Generation Company for a 3x660 MW super-critical boiler turbine generator package at Koradi in Maharashtra. The second contract worth Rs 1,635 crore is for designing, engineering, manufacture, supply, erection and commissioning of Balance of Plant systems, cooling towers, chimney, 400 kV and 200 kV switchyards and so on for a 1,200 MW Malwa coal fired power plant located in Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh.

 

The double mega orders clinched by Larsen & Toubro helped the Electricity sector (including Power Distribution) to top the table of sectors in terms of total orders bagged. In all, during November 2009, 10 contracts worth Rs 8,998 crore were awarded in this sector.

November 2009 witnessed finalisation of 48 domestic and 5 overseas contracts totalling Rs 17,817.67 crore with many Indian companies securing major contracts in sectors like Roadways, Water & Waste Management and Metallurgy.

 

Gammon Infrastructure Projects bagged a contract valued at Rs 850 crore from the NHAI for upgradation of NH-47 from Patna to Muzaffarpur in Bihar. IL&FS Transportation Networks awarded a Rs 790 crore contract to Maytas Infra for four-laning of Pune-Sholapur section of NH-9 from Km 144.40 to Km 249.00 in Maharashtra.

 

The Water & Waste Management sector saw awarding of nine contracts worth Rs 2,568.72 crore. Among these, Unity Infraprojects and IVRCL Infrastructures & Projects, jointly bagged the largest contract worth Rs 1,146 crore from Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. The scope of work envisages construction of a 8.3 km long tunnel using tunnel boring machine from Kapurbawdi to Bhandup Complex, Mumbai. Pratibha Industries bagged three contracts worth a total Rs 634.13 crore. They were for procurement, fabrication and laying of clear water main from Vajarahalli to HBR on the East of Bangalore; execution of 100 mld water treatment plant for the Meerut water supply project; and a water supply scheme to Guledgudda town.

 

A total of four contracts worth Rs 1,149 crore were awarded in the Metallurgy sector. The Pune based Thermax managed to secure a Rs 477.77 crore contract for construction and commissioning of a turnkey captive power plant for a ferro alloy unit in Orissa. Alstom Projects (India) was allocated a contract by Hindalco Industries worth Rs 365 crore. The scope of the contract include designing, engineering, supply, installation and commissioning of two gas treatment plants each at the Mahan and Aditya aluminium smelters located in Madhya Pradesh and Orissa respectively.

 

As far as overseas contracts are concerned, BHEL, Alfa Laval India, Fedders Llyod Corporation and KEC International were awarded contracts in Iraq, Vietnam, Ethiopia and Ghana respectively. BHEL is to supply one 42 MW (Frame 6B) gas turbine generating unit for Nasiryah power project in Iraq, while Alfa Laval to supply equipment engineering for PetroVietnam Group's ethanol process plant.
