 L&T steals the show
Bags major contracts of the month

In what could have been another disappointing month for the orders bagged scenario, L&T bagging eight contracts worth Rs 10,387.4 crore turned the table. Sans these contracts, August 2010 would have seen only 32 contracts worth Rs 6,505.58 crore.

In comparison to figures of August 2009, where 74 contracts worth Rs 28,771.25 crore were amassed, the number and value of contracts dropped more than half.

In the past five months of the current fiscal (April- August), 268 project contracts have been awarded costing Rs 81,595.05 crore. Out of this, the two major sectors i.e. Electricity and Transportation Infrastructure have garnered the maximum contracts. A total of 75 contracts worth Rs 29,082.91 crore were awarded in the Electricity sector while Rs 29,925.53 crore worth of 60 deals were bagged in the Transportation sector. In comparison to the April-August 2009 figures, while the contract value bagged by the Transportation sector rose 20 per cent, Electricity sector reported a fall of 10 per cent. L&T bagged the much talked about Rs 12,312 crore Hyderabad metro rail project. The contract was reawarded after the Satyam debacle. Further, the company was awarded a Rs 6,500 crore contract by Jaiprakash Power Ventures for the supply, erection and commissioning of boiler-turbine generator package, critical piping, electrostatic precipitators, and power plant automaton for the 1,980 MW Karchana power plant in Uttar Pradesh. It also won two contracts worth Rs 2,297 crore from SAIL for setting up blast furnace and sinter plant while ONGC gave away Rs 1,195 crore worth of contracts for setting up Additional Processing Units at its gas processing complexes at Hazira (Gujarat) and Uran (Maharashtra).

On 10 August 2010, Abhijeet Infrastructure handed over a contract valued at Rs 2,525 crore to BHEL for setting up a 1,080 MW coal based power plant in Latehar district of Jharkhand. Other than the Electricity sector, the Metallurgy, Railways and Petroleum Oil & Gas sectors saw finalisation of good number of contracts. Alstom Transport clinched a deal of Rs 1,471.3 crore to supply 42 train sets of four-car configuration totalling 168 coaches for the Chennai metro project.

A mere three contracts were amassed from the foreign shores. L&T and KEC International won projects from Oman and Abu Dhabi respectively for construction of overhead transmission lines. Elecon Engineering Company got a contract in Iran for supply of combined stacker cum reclaimer - 1,800 tph and a stacker - 350 tph with spares for pellet and HBI plant.
