Less Overseas Contracts pulled down September figures


Fall in the number of overseas contracts pulled down the overall contracts awarded figures in September 2009. Of the 60 project contracts awarded in the month only two worth Rs 294 crore were contracts by overseas companies. The balance 58, entailing project work worth Rs 17,461 crore were by domestic companies.


Despite the low figures observed in September 2009, the aggregate project contracts awarded during the latest quarter ended September 2009 was far higher than such statistics observed in the previous quarter (April-June 2009). As against 124 contracts worth Rs 22,660 crore awarded in the first quarter of the current fiscal, 216 contracts worth Rs 68,741 crore were awarded in the second quarter. Of the two overseas contracts fructified during September 2009, the first one worth Rs 270 crore was bagged by BHEL from Grodnoenergo for setting up a 120 MW cogeneration power plant at Grodno in Belarus and the second one was won by Concurrent (India) Infrastructure from the Sri Lanka Government for building two towers of 49 floors each in Colombo with an in-built eco-friendly hotel.

Among the sectors, the Power sector ruled the roost followed by Shipping Infrastructure, Roadways and Water & Waste Management sectors. However, the largest contract of the month worth Rs 4,440 crore was bagged by L&T Modular Fabrication Yard from ONGC in the Shipping Infrastructure sector. The scope of the contract envisages fabricating a massive jacket structure at L&T's waterfront fabrication yard within the Port of Sohar in Oman for an offshore facility destined for ONGC's Mumbai High North field.


In the Electricity and the Power Distribution sector, Larsen & Toubro secured a contract valued at Rs 2,000 crore for setting up a 2x384 MW gas based power plant at Vemagiri, near Rajamundry in Andhra Pradesh. GMR Energy was the awardee for the above deal. Close at heel were contracts won by Kalpataru Power Transmission from Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company and North East Transmission Company worth Rs 1,400 crore. The scope of work included execution of approx 2,500 km transmission lines and 137 substation end bays, spread over various zones of Maharashtra. It also included turnkey execution of 158 km of 400 kV D/C Churaibari-Silcher- Khelerihat line in Meghalaya and Assam.


The Roadways sector saw five contracts worth a sum of Rs 1,130.66 crore being awarded. The Maharashtra Government awarded a Rs 400 crore contract to IVRCL Infrastructures & Projects for four-laning of Baramati to Phaltan Road and Phaltan-Lonand to Shirwal Road in Pune and Satara district of Maharashtra on DBFOT basis. Two road projects valued at Rs 252 crore were clinched by Sadbhav Engineering for the improvement of Ranchi Ring Road in Jharkhand. The contracts were awarded by Jharkhand Road Projects Implementation Company.


A total of six projects were bagged in the Water & Waste Management sector amounting to Rs 1,043.23 crore. Pratibha Industries and Unity Infraprojects bagged orders worth Rs 406 crore and Rs 325.23 crore respectively from the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai for the replacement of two nos. 1,800 mm diameter existing riveted Tansa mains pipeline by one no. 2,750 mm diameter mild steel welded pipeline for Section I - from Tansa Dam to Jamboli and Section III- from Chinchavali to Tarali.
