During November 2008, ProjectsToday gathered information on 35 domestic and overseas contracts, representing a total investment of Rs.12,051.05 crore. The decline in the number of contracts awarded as observed since July 2008, continued in November also.
Of the total 35 contracts, seven contracts were bagged by Indian companies from international corporations. Sutchi NEB Construction Company, Hyderabad bagged the biggest contract worth Rs.1,250 crore from Sri Lanka's Board of Investment, for construction of a 70-storeyed building in Colombo. The second largest contract valued at Rs.140 crore was awarded to Kalpataru Power Transmission by Transco, UAE, for a transmission line project.
Among the 28 domestic contracts, the Rs.2,460 crore contract awarded by MMRDA to the consortium of L&T and Scomi Engineering Berhad, Malaysia was the largest. The scope of contract job included designing, construction, installation, testing and commissioning of a monorail system in Mumbai.
In the Power and Transmission sectors, nine contracts were awarded with a total work order of Rs.2,376.95 crore. Bharat Heavy Electricals bagged two orders amounting to Rs.1,565 crore. The first order worth Rs.1,325 crore was awarded by Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation and entailed setting up a 600 MW thermal power plant at Kakatiya Thermal Power Project Stage-II at Bhoopalapally in Andhra Pradesh. The second contract amounting Rs.240 crore was awarded by the Coastal Gujarat Power for the supply of 40 transformers for its coal based power project.

KEC International bagged three orders totaling Rs.235 crore. The first order (Rs.10 crore) was for supply of towers and installation of 132 kV transmission line from 132/33 kV S/S Kawardha to the proposed 132 kV S/S Pandariya. The second order (Rs.135 crore) was for the 220 kV D/C Tajikistan- Afghanistan interconnection project, while the third order (Rs.90 crore) was for supply and construction of lines associated with Chamera (HEP) III transmission system.
The Real Estate sector saw three contracts being awarded in November 2008, amounting to Rs.1,924 crore. Of these, two were overseas contracts. One was bagged by Sutchi NEB (Rs.1,250 crore) and the other was bagged jointly by C&C Constructions and BSCPL Infrastructure (Rs.635 crore). The third domestic contract worth Rs.39 crore was bagged by Maytas Infra to construct a township for employees of the JSW power project in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra.
In the Water Supply Scheme sector, six contracts were awarded worth a total of Rs.1,333.84 crore. L&T and Nagarjuna Construction Co, bagged the biggest orders within this sector, worth Rs.582 crore and Rs.401 crore, respectively, from the Hyderabad Metro Water Supply & Sewerage Board.
As per press reports, Maha Vitran is expected to issue Rs.3,192 crore worth of orders for its infrastructure works in December 2008. In all, the company plans to spend Rs.5,826 crore on strengthening its distribution networks.
