In May 2012, NTPC has awarded 11 contracts worth
Rs.2,070 crore in various business segments
including Coal/Lignite based power, Power
Distribution and Power Control Equipment. The company
gave the contract worth Rs.161 crore to EMCO for the supply,
installation and commissioning of 35 nos. transformers of
various ratings including 14 nos. 260 MVA, 420 kV, one
phase generator transformer (i.e., three phase bank of 78-
MVA capacity) and three nos. 200 MVA, 400 kV, three phase auto transformers for Solapur super thermal power project
(2 x 660 MW) and for Mouda super thermal power project-II
(2 x 660 MW) in Maharashtra. Also, L&T has been awarded
with the electrical work for Mouda super thermal project of
NTPC in Nagpur. BHEL secured a contract worth Rs.1,143 for
setting up a 1x500 MW thermal power generating unit
includes design, engineering, manufacture, supply and
erection & commissioning of steam generator and steam
turbine generator along with associated auxiliaries and state-of-the-art controls & instrumentation at
NTPC's Vindhyachal super thermal power
station (STPS), in Madhya Pradesh.
The month in all, witnessed 63 contracts
worth Rs.11,218 crore being awarded to various
entities in domestic and overseas shores. In
the sector wise distribution, the Power sector
was at the top with 17 contracts worth Rs.7,484
crore. Of which, the Coal/Lignite based
power sector has bagged maximum 15
contracts worth Rs.5,512 contributing 49.14 per
cent in the total order value share. Major
contract worth Rs.1,855 crore was secured by
BGR Energy Systems from Meja Urja Nigam
for the supply of 2x660 MW supercritical
boilers at Meja in Uttar Pradesh. Also, Meja
Urja Nigam provided another contract worth
Rs.1,606 crore to Toshiba JSW Turbine
Generation for supplying, engineering,
procurement, manufacturing, installation
and testing of two units of 660 MW steam
turbine generator islands for Meja thermal
power project in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh.
Another prominent contract secured during
the month was worth Rs.1,148 by Welspun
Energy Madhya Pradesh from the Madhya
Pradesh Government for a 125 MW solar
photovoltaic project on barren tract of land in
Mandsaur and Neemuch of Madhya Pradesh. The project
will be funded in 75:25 debt-equity ratio.
In the Wind based power sector, only one contract worth
Rs.305 crore was awarded to Suzlon Energy by the Gujarat
Mineral Development Corporation for setting up a 50 MW
wind power project in Jamnagar district of Gujarat. The
project will comprise 24 units of Suzlon's S95 wind turbines,
featuring doubly fed induction generator (DFIG)
technology, with an individual capacity of 2.1 MW. The DFIG
technology allows extracting maximum energy from the
wind for low wind speeds by optimising the turbine speed,
while minimising mechanical stresses on the turbine
during gusts of wind. Wind turbines using a doubly-fed
induction generator (DFIG) consist of a wound rotor
induction generator and an AC/DC/AC IGBT-based PWM
converter. The stator winding is connected directly to the 60 Hz grid while the rotor is fed at variable frequency
through the AC/DC/AC converter.
