The tardiness seen in awarding project contracts in January 2011 continued in February also. In all, 61 contracts worth Rs 14,992.7 crore were bagged by Indian companies. In January, 48 contracts worth Rs 14,603.4 crore were awarded.

Further, the fall was not limited just to the Indian shores. On the external front, Indian companies managed to secure only two contracts.

Among the major infrastructure sectors only Railways and Roadways saw some action. Though 12 contracts were finalised in the Electricity sector most of them were of lower values.

BHEL won a Rs 1,983.8 crore contract from the Public Electricity Corporation of Yemen for supplying gas turbines to Marib Gas Based Power Project (Phase II). This particular contract was the largest contract witnessed in the month. Another overseas deal cracked was by Steel Strips Wheels valued at Rs 190 crore for supply of 20,000 wheels per month for a new vehicle to be launched by Renault in Russia towards the end of 2011.
