Transportation Sector whizzes to the top

The Roadways, Railways, Aviation and Shipping Infrastructure sectors collectively outmatched the other sectors in June 2010 as India based business houses clinched contracts worth Rs 12,194.43 crore, accounting for 62.38 per cent share of the total work value.
Of the 17 contracts awarded in the Transport infrastructure sector, Roadways amassed eight contracts worth Rs 8,501.19 crore, Aviation Infrastructure (three contracts worth Rs 1,681.66 crore); Shipping Infrastructure (one Rs 1,436-crore contract) and Railways (five contracts at a sum of Rs 575.58 crore).

The NHAI awarded five major road projects in June 2010. IVRCL Infrastructures & Projects was given a contract valued at Rs 3,100 crore for four-/sixlaning of NH-17 section between Maharashtra-Goa border to Panaji-Goa-Karnataka border from km 475.040 to km 611.000 in Goa under NHDP-Phase- III. A Rs 2,960-crore contract for six-laning of 180 km Delhi-Agra road passing through Haryana and Uttar Pradesh was awarded to Reliance Infrastructure. Ashoka Buildcon and GVK Developmental Projects were given Rs 909 crore and Rs 850 crore projects in Orissa and Rajasthan respectively.

A consortium of Eredene Capital PLC, Grup Maritim TCB SL, Obrascon Huarte Lain SA and Lanco Infratech received a Rs 1,436 crore contract from Ennore Port. The scope of work includes building and operating a container terminal at the port in Tamil Nadu.
GMR Infrastructure along with Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad was given an overseas order worth Rs 1,390 crore by the Government of Maldives to build, operate, modernise and expand the Male International Airport in Maldives.
In retrospect, from January to June 2010, 94 contracts worth Rs 49,439.53 crore have been amassed by the Transportation sector. The Roadways sector, so far, has managed to pocket 63 contracts, becoming the second-highest gainer in the first six months of this calendar year. The Power sector is the highest gainer with 125 contracts worth Rs 53,273.16 crore in its kitty. June saw a total of 65 contracts worth Rs 19,547.35 crore, of which eight were bagged from foreign entities. Sembawang Engineers & Constructors, a subsidiary of Punj Lloyd, secured a Rs 1,394 crore project for the construction of the Equarius Hotel, a world-class spa, beach villas, an oceanarium, and a water theme park in Singapore.
Meanwhile, TRANSCO, Fujairah, awarded L&T a contract for construction of 3x132 kV substations at Al Wathba, Mohd Bin Zayed City including Sudha Port Fujairah.
