4,214 project tenders floated in January 2009
January 2009 saw a 15 per cent increase in project tendering activities as compared to December 2008. However, the increase was in number of tenders and not in the value of tenders. In all 4,214 project related tenders worth Rs.21,767 crore were announced in January, compared to the 3,671 tenders worth Rs.27,542 crore floated in December 2008.

From the total number of tenders floated in January, 3,344 tenders worth Rs.17,271 crore were floated by state government agencies, 846 tenders worth Rs.4,482 crore by Central government agencies and the balance 24 by private sector companies.
On 28 January 2008, the Karnataka Road Development Corporation (Project Proponent) invited bids for development of state highways and major district roads. The Government of Karnataka is launching a new initiative to develop 10,000 km core road network and 12,600 km rural connectivity in the state under the PPP framework. The road network considered for development has been divided into 52 packages with a mix of twolaning, four-laning and six-laning of existing state highways and major district roads.
Among the major sectors, Roadways topped the sector-wise list with 1,937 project tenders worth Rs.9,575 crore. Community services, Irrigation and Railways followed the list with 688 tenders worth Rs.1,759 crore, 346 tenders worth Rs.2,710 crore and 319 tenders worth Rs.1,630 crore, respectively.

The Power Distribution sector saw the 137 projects related tenders worth Rs.286 crore being floated during January 2009. Among the list, the most notable one was by Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam, a Government of Haryana undertaking for developing 400 kV transmission system for evacuating power from the 2x660 MW thermal power plant at Jhajjar and 1,424 MW Adani thermal power project at Mohindergarh. On 15 January 2009, it invited two separate RfQs for development of transmission system through PPP, on DBFO basis.
The Aviation sector saw 14 project related tenders worth Rs.830.21 crore being floated in January 2009. The noteworthy tender was floated by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation. It invited RfQs for the development of greenfield airport in Sindhudurg, Maharashtra. Another notable tender was by Airports Authority of India for constructing a new airport at Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh, at an estimated cost at Rs.498.33 crore.
National Buildings Construction Corporation invited bids for construction of medical college/retrofitting of existing ESIC hospitals at Parel and Andheri in Mumbai, at an estimated cost at Rs.300 crore. Punjab Infrastructure Development Board also invited bids for developing super specialty hospitals on DBOT basis at Bhatinda and Mohali, in Punjab.
Among the states, Maharashtra topped the state-wise list with 854 project tenders worth Rs.3,041 crore. Orissa, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu followed list with 394 tenders worth Rs.834 crore, 331 tenders worth Rs.4,360 crore and 330 tenders worth Rs.703 crore, respectively. Bulk of tenders announced by the Orissa state government agencies for construction and upgradation of rural roads under PMGSY, helped Orissa in ranking second in the state-wise list.
Private Sector
