GAIL foraying into gas power projects

The month of August 2010 saw 3,787 project tenders worth Rs 18,885 crore being floated. Of this, 2,505 tenders worth Rs 11,784 crore were by State Government agencies, 1,200 tenders (Rs 7,017 crore) were by Central Government agencies and the balance 82 tenders were by private companies.
Though the month of August saw fall in tendering activities in terms of tender value, the first five months (April - August 2010) data indicates 6.1 per cent increase in the number of project tenders floated and 18.6 per cent increase in terms of tender value when compared with the statistics for the same period last year.
Among the floated tenders during August 2010, the two notable tenders were by the governmentowned GAIL. On 13 Aug 2010, GAIL invited bids for preparation of DFR and EIA study for setting up of a gas based combined cycle power plant of around 250 MW capacity at Usar in Maharashtra and on 18 Aug 2010 it invited bids for preparation of DFR for setting up of a gas based combined cycle power plant of around 350 MW capacity at Dibiyapur (Uttar Pradesh) and Vijaipur (Madhya Pradesh).
The month also saw an ambitious roadways tender being floated by Madhya Pradesh Road Development Corporation (MPRDC). On 4 Aug 2010 MPRDC invited global RfQs for development of following three road projects on BOT basis.

Roadways topped the sector-wise list with 1,281 project tenders worth Rs 4,877 crore. Railways, Community Services and Irrigation followed the list with 391 tenders (Rs 1,863 crore), 376 tenders (Rs 1,240 crore) and 266 tenders (Rs 799 crore) respectively.
NHAI continued its highway tendering process in August by floating 21 tenders. Out of these, 17 tenders were for providing various consultancy services for development of national highways across the country.

Investment in small hydro projects had taken a backseat following the cancellation of a number of projects by state government. August month saw fresh investment proposals being announced by the Government of Himachal Pradesh for setting up 18 hydro projects with capacity ranging from 7.5 MW to 300 MW (total installed capacity of 1,357.5 MW) on BOOT basis at various locations in the state. On 3 Aug 2010, KSEB invited bids for renovation, modernisation and upgrating works of existing 4x8 MW Poringalkuthu hydro electric project to 4x9 MW in the state of Kerala. In all, 49 project tenders were floated in this sector.
Among the states, Maharashtra topped the statewise list with 728 tenders worth Rs 2,494 crore. Gujarat, Orissa and Madhya Pradesh followed the list with 295 tenders worth Rs 1,403 crore, 292 tenders worth `900 crore and 284 tenders worth Rs 3,285 crore, respectively.
