The Municipal Corporation (MC) of Chandigarh on 29 May, 2025 provided a comprehensive update to the Ministry of Finance and Agence Française de Développement (AFD) on the status of the city’s 24x7 water supply project.
Chaired by the Municipal Commissioner, the session detailed the current implementation progress, challenges, and future steps. Officials shared that the long-term technical assistance (LTTA) contract began in February 2024, while the contract for upgrading the Kajauli Water works was awarded in August 2024. However, preparation of the design-build-operate (DBO) tender documents has been delayed since April 2024. The delay is largely due to a complete overhaul of the project team and the lack of a dedicated Project Director since October 2024, which has significantly slowed decision-making and execution.
The MC clarified that the Kajauli water works component will be funded under the AMRUT scheme. The current budget remains adequate for the project's successful completion, including integration of 13 nearby villages. Agreements between AFD and India’s Department of Economic Affairs (DEA)—the credit facility agreement (CFA) and grant facility agreement (GFA), were signed in September and November 2022, respectively, followed by the final project agreement in December 2022.
