The Andhra Pradesh state government has granted a no objection certificate (NOC) to Vedanta's Cairn Oil & Gas division for hydrocarbon development in Krishna district.
The approval for 20 onchore oil and gas wells concerns Vedanta's block in the Machilipatnam division, where 15 of the proposed drilling sites were found to be within sensitive water networks and were directed to be relocated. The remaining 20 sites, located more than 500 mtrs. away, were cleared for development. The decision follows assessments of the Krishna Delta Canal network and its irrigation sensitivity, which raised concerns about potential impacts on water resources. Under the approved terms, Vedanta is prohibited from drawing water from surface sources and must prevent contamination from drilling activities.
Additionally, the company has proposed using groundwater, for which separate approvals will be required. "The water resources department will retain the right to inspect the project site without notice and suspend operations if compliance is not met," officials said.
