Delhi’s biggest sewage treatment plant, and the largest in Asia, will be inaugurated in Okhla on September 30.
Built at a cost of Rs 1,161 crore over 40 acres, the 124 million gallons per day (MGD) facility was developed by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) in partnership with the Centre under the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), with financial aid from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The plant is expected to significantly reduce untreated sewage entering the Yamuna River and will serve nearly 40 lakh residents across south, central, and old Delhi, including areas like Green Park, Civil Lines, Hauz Khas, Lajpat Nagar, and Okhla.
The inauguration will be attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and Water Minister Parvesh Verma, with participation from Japanese dignitaries. The plant replaces four older facilities and includes provisions for power generation and production of reusable A-class sludge.
