Since its launch in August 2019, the Jal Jeevan Mission has made significant strides in providing potable water to rural households in Assam.
As part of the Central initiative, Assam has made considerable progress, with 5.79 million out of 7.22 million rural households receiving tap water connections, bringing the state’s coverage to 81.65 percent. This marks a notable improvement in rural drinking water accessibility. With 5.90 million functional household tap connections, Assam is moving steadily toward universal access. Initially, the Government of India allocated Rs 2.09 trillion for the mission, nearly fully utilised by 2024-25 to cover planning, approvals, and implementation.
However, since Central financial support for the mission applicable until March, 2024, the Finance Minister has proposed extending the mission’s scope with an enhanced outlay in the 2025-26 Budget. The proposal is under consideration, reflecting the state's commitment to continuing its progress under the Jal Jeevan Mission.
