In a strategic move to meet Navi Mumbai’s projected water demand of 1,257 million litres per day (MLD) by 2050, the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has initiated a series of vital water infrastructure projects. These efforts aim to ensure sustainable water supply across CIDCO’s jurisdiction while supporting the city's rapid urban development.
A key project under implementation is the augmentation of the Hetawane Water Supply Scheme, which is advancing in four phases. As of the latest update, 41 percent of the water treatment plant, 8.5 percent of the raw water tunnel, and 25.7 percent of the pure water tunnel have been completed. The full project is expected to be operational by June 2029.
To address long-term needs, CIDCO is developing new sources like the Kondhane Dam on the Ulhas River, with an initial supply of 250 MLD, scalable to 350 MLD. The Kondhane and Balganga dam projects are slated for completion in four to five years. In the interim, the Maharashtra government approved an additional 120 MLD from the Hetawane Dam in August 2020, for Rs 119.80 crore, increasing CIDCO's total allocation from this source to 270 MLD, helping CIDCO bridge short-term demand and enhance regional water security.
