The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) will launch the Ring Main Pipeline Project to connect all its water sources and ensure balanced distribution across the city.
The project, funded with Rs 2,423 crore, is set to begin by June 2025, as announced by Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu in the State Budget 2025-26. The circular 95 km pipeline, with diameter between one mtr. and 1.8 mtrs., will create a closed-loop system that links multiple water sources to 11 distribution stations.
Unlike the current system -where five water treatment plants and three desalination plants operate independently, this initiative will allow water from any source to be supplied to any locality, ensuring flexibility in addressing shortages. The State government has also allocated Rs 6,668 crore for combined water supply schemes across seven districts, along with the renovation of 102 drinking water schemes.
The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board will oversee these improvements to enhance efficiency.<
