The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has received a Rs 27 crore grant from the Central government for the upgrade and modernisation of sewage treatment plants (STPs) at nine locations—Mundhwa, Kharadi, Vitthalwadi, Naidu Hospital, Erandwane, Baner, Bhairoba, Bopodi, and Tanajiwadi. This financial support was awarded under the Jal Hi Amrit scheme.
According to Additional Municipal Commissioner Prithviraj BP, the commendable efforts of the electrical and drainage departments played a significant role in securing this incentive. Of the total Rs 27 crore, Rs 18.90 crore has already been released and will be used for technological upgrades and system improvements at the mentioned STPs.
In addition to this, PMC is working on constructing ten new STPs as part of its river rejuvenation initiative, for which funding has been arranged through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). These projects aim to enhance the treatment of sewage water before its discharge into city rivers, ultimately contributing to better environmental sustainability and water quality.
