On 18 November 2024, the Centre's high-level Network Planning Group (NPG) convened to evaluate significant infrastructure projects aimed at improving connectivity and addressing logistical challenges.

One of the major projects was the 134.52 km Wardha-Balharshah fourth Railway Line as part of the Delhi-Chennai High-Density Corridor. These regions are vital due to their industrial hubs, including the Chandrapur Super Thermal Power Station and Ballarpur Paper Mills, along with coal production areas operated by Western Coalfields (WCL). The project aims to ease over-utilisation of existing railway lines, which are currently running at 152 percent capacity, and enhance the smooth flow of freight, particularly for coal, steel, and cement industries.

In addition, the NPG also reviewed the Itarsi-Nagpur Quadrupling line project, a 297.05 km stretch aimed at reducing congestion along one of the country's high-density routes. This project will serve critical industrial areas, including Nagpur's Multi-Modal International Passenger and Cargo Hub Airport (MIHAN), and power plants at Sarni and Koradi.

Another significant initiative discussed was the Gondia-Balharshah Doubling railway line, which will span approx. 240 km through multiple districts in Maharashtra. This project will ease congestion and support freight movement for key industrial zones, including iron-ore mines in Kelzar and coalfields in Chandrapur.

The NPG's efforts to evaluate and advance these infrastructure projects reflect a broader commitment to improving India's transportation and supply chain networks under the PM GatiShakti framework.
