Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) will prepare the detailed project report (DPR) for two corridors connecting Poonamallee to Parandur and Koyambedu with Avadi in Tamil Nadu.
Subsequently, CMRL recently prepared detailed feasibility reports (DFR) for both corridors- Poonamallee to Parandur and Koyambedu to Avadi via Mogappair and submitted them to the state government. Koyambedu to Avadi corridor (an extension of the phase-II corridor-Madhavaram to Sholinganallur) will have 15 stations and be developed as an elevated line covering 16.07 km at an estimated cost of Rs 6,376.18 crore. Poonamallee to Parandur corridor will be built at Rs 10,712 crore and will have 19 stations covering 43.63 km.
CMRL has floated bids to prepare DPR for both these corridors and is anticipated to complete this report in six to eight months. This is important because the document would be extensive for chalking out the details of the corridor, including the projected traffic in each proposed station, train operation, number of trains required, signalling and overhead equipment requirements, and other such aspects.
The plan to connect Koyambedu to Avadi via Thirumangalam and Mogappair was mooted after commuters residing in areas have been seeking Metro connectivity for improved mobility. After the government announced its plan to build a second airport at Parandur, it came to the fore that mass rapid transport was necessary for passengers to commute to the location.
