The government of Chhattisgarh has approached the central government to find a way to put back on track the Surguja ultra mega power project in the state.
Pursuant to this, the central government is likely to work on finding a way to bring this derailed project back on track.
The power project, with 4,000 MW capacity, was stuck due to denial of 'forest clearance' to two captive coal blocks -- Pindirakhi and Putaparorgia -- located in Hasdeo Arand coal fields. Categorization of forest cover as ‘go’ and ‘no-go’ areas, depending on density of forest, became a major stumbling block in the project's clearance.
The state government has proposed the central government to re-examine the matter for an early 'forest clearance' to the captive coal blocks or alternatively arrange any other coal blocks to enable the Power Finance Corporation (PFC) to take up bidding activities for the selection of agency, for implementation of the project.
Of the total capacity of the plant, 2,000 MW power will be supplied to the state at a lower cost and the remaining 2,000 MW will be supplied to Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Goa, and Daman & Diu.
