Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced the construction of a new state-of-the-art water treatment plant at Chandrawal, aimed at strengthening the city’s water supply infrastructure.
The Rs 599 crore project, which will have a capacity of 105 million gallons per day (MGD), is set to be commissioned in 2026. The Chief Minister chaired a review meeting of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to assess preparations for the upcoming summer season, where she highlighted that the project had been stalled for years, resulting in a significant cost escalation of nearly Rs 400 crore. The new plant will cater to about 11 percent of Delhi’s population, improving water supply in densely populated areas such as Model Town, Chandni Chowk, Karol Bagh, and RK Puram.
The project will also focus on strengthening underground reservoirs, installing water meters, and preventing contamination. Additionally, there are plans to reduce non-revenue water from 30-45 percent to below 15 percent within three years.
