The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has approved a major set of reforms aimed at making the Capital’s water distribution cleaner, more transparent and environmentally sustainable.
At its 176th meeting chaired by Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh, the Board cleared the induction of 600 electric vehicle water tankers as part of a shift towards technology-driven and citizen-centric water management. Of these, 300 EV tankers will supply free water to residential areas, especially unauthorised and underserved colonies, while the remaining 300 will serve commercial and institutional users under a regulated payment system. All tankers will feature stainless steel tanks, GPS tracking and app-based booking to curb pollution and eliminate grey-market practices.
The Board also approved scientific desilting of the Wazirabad Barrage pondage area to boost raw water storage, a move that will generate revenue instead of costs. Sewer connectivity and decentralised sewage treatment projects were also cleared to protect the Yamuna. The Board also approved sewer connectivity projects for the four groups of colonies—Sangam Nagar, Ranhola, Wazirabad and Begumpur, benefitting nearly 12.5 lakh residents. In addition, the Zindpur decentralised sewage treatment project was cleared to ensure that untreated sewage does not flow into the Yamuna.
