Construction work on the proposed 'Diamond Bourse' project in Khajod village near Surat, Gujarat, began in the presence of Vijay Rupani, Chief Minister of Gujarat, on 23 October, 2016.
The project is spread across 36 acre of land with a construction area of 65 lakh sq ft, and will hold over 4,000 state-of-the-art offices of diamond merchants.
The proposed diamond bourse is projected at providing a global platform for buying and selling diamonds at one location. Traders not only from India but also from other countries will be able to buy rough as well as polished diamonds directly at one place.
The diamond bourse project will create an employment opportunity for 1.5 lakh people.
The Diamond Bourse will offer facilities,like trading hall, museums, banks, self deposit vaults, customs office, auction house, retail zone and security control rook among others.
To give a boost to local industry, the Gujarat government will unlikely levy tax on the import of rough diamonds meant to be re-exported after polishing.
